Racism / Poetry by @surobiscribbles

This year has been a pivotal point when it comes to dealing with racism. Racism is out there in all shapes and forms whether it is a racist person staying away, giving dirty looks or even verbally abusing someone just because of their race or skin colour.

However, this year racism was properly exposed. An innocent man named George Floyd was mercilessly killed and he opened the door to awareness about racism. Social media messages, tweets, videos to even protests during COVID-19 overtook society. Yes, this may create awareness, but is it really effective?

I think that speaking is only effective if it doesn’t only become a social media trend but instead, you learn others’ views about it and ensure that you focus on yourself when it comes to racism. Do you think you have ever been racist towards someone? What can you do to make sure that everyone feels safe and not be attacked by racial slurs?

I think that rather than making this ‘Black Lives Matter’ just a temporary social media trend, everyone should just educate and/or reflect on themselves. Yes, now awareness has been given, George Floyd’s brother has himself said to ‘vote and to stop protests’.

Reflect. Speak Out.
